Lakeisha Holloway, driver in fatal Las Vegas Strip crash, had marijuana in system, DA says

A Portland woman accused of mowing down dozens of people —  killing one of them— while driving on the Las Vegas Strip earlier this month had marijuana in her system at the time of the crash, authorities say.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday that toxicology test results showed Lakeisha Holloway, 24, tested positive for marijuana and marijuana metabolites. She faces charges of murder, child endangerment and failure to stop at the scene of an accident and is next due in court in Nevada on Jan. 20, court records show.

Police say Holloway drove for several blocks on the sidewalk on Dec. 20 with her 3-year-old daughter in the back seat and hit more than 30 people including members of the Pacific University men’s wrestling team. The crash killed Jessica Valenzuela, 32, of Buckeye, Ariz.

“There is no reasonable explanation or excuse for the actions of this defendant,” said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson in a news release.

According to a police report, Holloway told investigators at the time that she was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol. She couldn’t explain why she drove onto the sidewalk.
